The regulator in Italy (AGCOM) has long been moving to enforce strict registration of brands sending SMS into Italy. In addition, registrations are only permitted for businesses based in Italy who directly own the brand. This primarily affects alphanumeric sender IDs.
From 19 March 2025, any alphanumeric SMS traffic sent to Italy from non-local clients will no longer be supported. This means traffic from unauthorized service providers or clients who are not based in Italy will be blocked.
Alphanumeric Sender IDs are permitted only if registered in the AGCOM registry. Registration is limited to business users based in Italy who own the brand they intend to register.
Numeric Sender IDs, excluding Italian long numbers or short codes provisioned by Sinch, are not supported. Provisioning these numbers is exclusively for local clients. Therefore, we strongly recommend that international clients transition to RCS.
What can be done:
-
Local direct clients with brand ownership should register their sender ID’s at the soonest, please contact us if you still need to register.
-
Aggregators and Service Providers delivering traffic with alphanumeric Sender IDs must comply with AGCOM recommendations and obtain general authorisation to register aliases on behalf of their clients directly in the AGCOM alias registry. The standing regulation is available on the AGCOM website at this link.
- Non Local Senders: Alphanumeric Sender IDs are permitted only if registered in the AGCOM registry. Registration is limited to business users based in Italy who own the brand they intend to register. Numeric Sender IDs are not supported. Provisioning these numbers is exclusively for local clients. Therefore, we strongly recommend that international clients transition to RCS.
