The article explains the concept and setup of Alpha Tags, also known as Sender IDs or Alpha names, used in messaging. An Alpha Tag, which can be your business name or a unique identifier (3-11 characters), replaces a phone number as the sender ID, enhancing brand recognition. It is suitable for one-way messages since recipients cannot reply.
- Alpha tags are subject to approval - more information can be found in this article Understanding & Registering your Alpha Tag: Why it's crucial for your business.
- Alpha tags only support 1-Way messaging, if you need to receive replies to your messages it may be better to use Dedicated Numbers.
- It is best practice to include an opt-out link in messages sent from Alpha Tags to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements when sending marketing materials. More info on how to do that can be found in this article Opt-Outs.
How to set up an Alpha Tag
Important - To edit or update an Alpha Tag you will need to start this process again and create a new Alpha Tag to replace the existing one. Once done you can then click on 'Actions' and delete the original Alpha Tag you were looking to update. |
1. In the menu, click on Settings, then select Numbers:
2. In the Alpha tags section, click on Add a tag:
3. Select the countries that you wish to register your alpha tag for sending messages in.
4. Enter the alpha tag that you wish to register and your use case for registering it.
Note - While the Alpha Tag approval process is normally within an hour or two, it can take up to 24 hours during high demand periods. All new Alpha Tags that enter the Telstra network (in Australia) for the first time will be subject Telstra's message filtering process. This process can cause a sending delay of up to five minutes for the very first message sent from the new Alpha Tag. After the initial message successfully passes the filtering process, all subsequent messages sent from the same Alpha Tag will move through the messaging gateway as normal. |
Once your request for an Alpha Tag has been approved, you can select it on an ad-hoc basis when sending a new message by selecting the option from the Sender ID list in the New Message window:
You can also update the default sender ID so that all future messages will be sent from your Alpha Tag - this article can show you how.
