How to Create a Campaign | for an audience imported from a file
By importing a file you can send campaigns to recipients that are not part of your existing contact base. Using this option, you can import contacts that you already have in any internal tool, such as CRMs, during the campaign creation.
Note - compliance and consent are extremely important when adding contacts. The user must agree to receive messages from you. If you are using a CSV file to upload contacts, make sure all of them agreed to receive your messages, as ensuring the campaign sending to contacts who opted-in is the company's responsibility. |
To create a campaign for an audience imported from CSV file:
1. Choose Import from file in the option Define your audience
2. Drag and drop or upload a file from your computer:
- The file must be in CSV format
- Accepted separators: comma and semicolon
- Maximum file size is 20mb
- Do not remove the first line. A header is mandatory
- The column with the user's number (for example, the phone number for WhatsApp) needs to be named "phone" or "id"
- If the id is a telephone number you need to add the country code for each number
- You can add more columns with contact data. This data can be used as variables to compose content of your campaign message in the "Design your message" step
- You can download an CSV example clicking on Download a template:
3. Once you've imported your file, you can select the channel for your campaign. Channels are suggested considering the ones you have configured in your account and that are available for sending campaigns. Important:
- Channels need to be connected in advance to be able to send a campaign on them (see how to connect a channel).
- Make sure that the id you put in the CSV file are compatible with the channel you are selecting, for example: phone numbers with the country code as ids for WhatsApp sending). This option to import CSV file to compose the audience makes more sense for campaigns in channels where the user identifier is the phone number.
4. You can find the following from your audience summary
- Audience imported - the total number of contacts from your imported file
- Estimated customers reach - potential contacts that can be reached through the selected channel(s)
- Invalid format - total number of contacts with missing data, such as missing the phone number
-
CSV column names - the column names from the imported file
5. After reviewing your audience summary, click the Next button to go the "Design your message" step. In this step you will be able to configure your campaign message and use the column names from your imported file as variables.
Be aware that the contacts from the CSV file will not be automatically added to your Message Media contact base. If you want them to be created in the database, it is recommended that you first import your contacts, create a list with them and then send a campaign to the list you've created, using Select from contact lists as the audience source. Check more details in the section below.

How to Create a Campaign | for a contact list or segment
In this audience option, you can send campaigns for contacts that already interacted with your channels and for contacts that you have previously import into the platform. You can create a contact list or a segment and use them in the campaign sending:
1. List is a static set of contacts. The contact list can be created accessing Contacts > Lists. In this page you can manually create the list or see the lists that were automatically created through some external integration, such as Shopify. Click here to check how to import contacts and create a list.
2. Segment is a group of contacts who have something in common with each other. You can create segments based on contact fields, for example: contacts who live in Australia. A segment is a dynamic contact group, as when a new contact that matches the segment criteria is added to the platform, they are automatically added to the segment.
Note - Just subscribed contacts from selected list or segment will be consider for the campaign. Unsubscribed contacts will be automatically removed from the audience and will not count as contacts that may be reached by this campaign. |
In the Setup campaign step, if you select the option Select from contact lists or Select from a contact segments, a dropdown will open with all audiences available in your account. You can choose a specific audience you've already created or create a new one:
The option Create new list or Create new segment just appear for users with the administrator or advanced user role, basic users won't see this button. If you click in this option you'll be redirected to another page to to create your list or segment. After that, you can come back to the campaigns list (Messaging > Social Messaging > All campaigns), click in your campaign that is in "Draft" status to edit it and continue the campaign creation. Or update your campaign creation page so the newly created list or segment will appear in the dropdown to be selected.
After selecting your audience, on the right side of the screen you can check your audience summary with the number of subscribed contacts per channel, estimated contacts reach (potential subscribed contacts that can be reached through the selected channel(s)) and also the contact fields that can be used in the next step for personalizing the campaign message.
Things to Remember
- If your selected audience has contacts from other channels than social, you will be able to see this feedback in the audience summary. The Social messaging flow is only aimed at sending campaigns to social channels, such as WhatsApp. If you want to send SMS/MMS campaigns you must do so in Messaging > SMS messaging > New message.
- For now, the social messaging flow is able to send campaigns just for WhatsApp. If your selected audience has contacts from other channels, such as Instagram or Facebook Messenger, only the WhatsApp contacts will be able to be reached. This information will be showed in the audience summary also.
