The most popular way to send messages in the United States is by using a local number, sometimes referred to as a “10 Digit Longcode” or “10DLC number”. Before you can send messages in the United States you must provision one of these numbers and register it for use by your organization. This article describes the steps to purchase and register a local number for SMS and MMS messaging.
Log into the web portal and click on Settings and then Numbers.
- Go to the Dedicated Numbers section and click on Add a number.
- Select a number that you like and purchase it by clicking Add dedicated number.
As soon as you purchase the number, the registration process will begin automatically. Click on Begin Registration Process. You will need to have your organization's EIN to complete the registration process so make sure that you have that ready.
- Enter a description of the messaging use case(s) that you will use the number for, and provide some sample message content. This is used by the mobile carriers to help ensure that spam messages are not sent using the number.
- Enter details of how your recipients will opt-in to receive messages from you. If they will opt-in via keyword, you must also provide the keyword(s) that will be used. Additionally you must indicate how many messages each of your subscribed recipients will typically receive in a month, and indicate if you will be sending messages relating to financial services and/or age gated topics (alcohol, tobacco, etc.)
- Enter the details of your organization. This will be used during the registration process to ensure the legitimacy of all businesses attempting to send messages using local numbers in the United Sates.
- Once you finish entering all of the information for your number registration review the details to confirm that everything is correct. If so click on Submit. Your registration request will then be processed and you will be notified via email as soon as it is verified and the number is ready to use.
